Flowers are moment’s representations of things that are in themselves eternal.(Sri Aurobindo)
It is the seemingly contradictory combination of intense life-force and vulnerability that fascinates me in flowers. There is also a striking similarity between the growth and development of flowers and that of butterflies - in a bud the petals are neatly folded just like the wings of a butterfly in a cocoon. Both are utterly vulnerable but develop with precision and with a force for life. The entire blooming process can be observed with the naked eye with the evening primrose. With all it’s available energy a beautiful perfumed flower unfolds which insects soon discover. In my paintings I try to evoke the combination of energy and vulnerability and in my sculptures I try express this overwhelming energy in form and movement.
